Microsoft's Cloud Services Propel Strong Growth in FY24 Q3 Earnings
REDMOND, Wash. — April 25, 2024 — Microsoft Corporation today reported significant growth for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024, which ended on March 31. The tech giant saw its revenue jump by 17% to $61.9 billion compared to the same period last year. This increase was buoyed by a strong performance in cloud services, according to the company's latest earnings release.
Robust Financial Performance
Microsoft's financial health showed marked improvements across various metrics:
- Operating income rose to $27.6 billion, marking a 23% increase.
- Net income was up by 20% to $21.9 billion.
- Diluted earnings per share also increased by 20%, reaching $2.94.
Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO of Microsoft, highlighted the transformative impact of AI technologies, stating, "Microsoft Copilot and Copilot stack are orchestrating a new era of AI transformation, driving better business outcomes across every role and industry."
Cloud Segment Drives Revenue
The company's cloud business was particularly strong, with Microsoft Cloud generating $35.1 billion in revenue, a 23% increase year-over-year. Amy Hood, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Microsoft, credited this performance to "strong execution by our sales teams and partners."
Segment-Wise Highlights
Productivity and Business Processes
This segment saw a revenue of $19.6 billion, a 12% increase, led by:
- A 13% rise in Office Commercial products and cloud services, spurred by a 15% growth in Office 365 Commercial revenue.
- Office Consumer products and cloud services, which grew by 4%, and Microsoft 365 Consumer subscribers increased to 80.8 million.
- LinkedIn and Dynamics products also showed strong performances, with revenue up by 10% and 19% respectively.
Intelligent Cloud
Revenue in this segment reached $26.7 billion, up 21%:
- Server products and cloud services revenue surged by 24%, driven by a robust 31% growth in Azure and other cloud services.
More Personal Computing
This segment, which includes Windows, Devices, and Xbox, reported revenues of $15.6 billion, an increase of 17%:
- Windows revenue saw an 11% increase.
- Devices revenue, however, decreased by 17%.
- Xbox content and services revenue skyrocketed by 62%, largely due to the impact of the Activision acquisition.
Return to Shareholders
In Q3 FY24, Microsoft returned a substantial $8.4 billion to its shareholders through share repurchases and dividends, underscoring its commitment to returning value to investors.
