Oracle Announces $8 Billion Investment to Boost Cloud Computing and AI Capabilities in Japan

April 17, 2024, AUSTIN, Texas and TOKYO, Japan — Oracle Corporation Japan has unveiled a major strategic investment plan, committing over $8 billion over the next decade to expand its cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in Japan. This ambitious investment aims to enhance Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s (OCI) presence and address the increasing digital sovereignty needs of Japanese customers and partners.

Oracle's investment will focus on increasing the capacity and capabilities of its public cloud regions in Tokyo and Osaka, as well as expanding local operations for Oracle Alloy and OCI Dedicated Region. These initiatives are designed to support the transfer of mission-critical workloads to the cloud by Japanese government and business entities, ensuring compliance with local regulations and sovereignty requirements.

Expanding Local Support and Operations

To better serve its Japanese clientele, Oracle plans to significantly boost its Japan-based operations and engineering support teams. Toshimitsu Misawa, corporate executive officer and president at Oracle Corporation Japan, emphasized the commitment to local growth, stating, "We are dedicated to meeting our customers and partners where they are in their cloud journey. By growing our cloud footprint and providing a team to support sovereign operations in Japan, we are enabling innovation with AI and other cloud services while supporting regulatory and sovereignty needs."

Innovative Cloud Solutions

Oracle’s investment will not only increase the number of data centers but also enhance the variety of cloud services offered within Japan. Oracle is unique among hyperscalers in its ability to deliver a complete suite of over 100 cloud services and AI locally, whether within a country's borders or directly on an organization’s premises. This capability is part of Oracle's broader strategy to offer distributed cloud services that provide flexibility and extensive control to customers.

The OCI distributed cloud portfolio includes:

  • Dedicated Cloud: Allowing customers to operate all OCI cloud services within their own data centers through OCI Dedicated Region, and enabling partners to resell OCI cloud services and tailor the customer experience via Oracle Alloy.
  • Hybrid Cloud: Delivering essential cloud services on-premises through solutions like Oracle Exadata Cloud@Customer and Compute Cloud@Customer, with deployments managed in over 60 countries.
  • Public Cloud: Maintaining 49 hyperscale public cloud regions that cater to organizations of all sizes, including those needing to meet strict EU sovereignty controls.
  • Multicloud: Providing options such as Oracle Database@Azure, MySQL HeatWave on AWS, and Oracle Interconnect for Microsoft Azure, which facilitate the integration of essential capabilities across different cloud platforms.

This extensive investment by Oracle signifies a robust commitment to supporting Japan's digital transformation initiatives and illustrates Oracle’s leadership in providing flexible, sovereign cloud solutions across the globe.
